For quite a long time we've known that certain parts of our brains are responsible for specialized tasks. The left side of our brain controls the right side of our body and vice versa. But that doesn't mean that the halves of brain work independently - they are connected and work in harmony. But if the cords get cut out it changes everything. In the 1940s neurosurgeons came up with the idea of splitting people's brains to treat epilepsy. And it actually worked.
